Designing simple lever and pin crossbow locks

Introduction Edit

The lever and pin trigger is probably the simplest lock one can make for a crossbow. The basic principle is very simple: when a lever is squeezed, a pin attached to it pushes the bowstring from it's catch, releasing it. Regardless of it's apparent simplicity there is a big difference between one that works and one that is a pleasure to shoot. There are a few common variants of this type of lock mechanism.

Generic considerations Edit

There are a few generic ways to optimize the smoothness of the release with this type of lock:

  • Make sure the catch for the bowstring has as little friction as possible. A polished metal catch is probably best.
  • Canting the catch slightly forwards makes the trigger pull easier. Doing the opposite makes the pull very stiff.
  • Cut the pin to exactly correct length. Too short pin will not push the bowstring off the catch. Too long pin coupled with an aggressive trigger pull may cause misfires.
  • Make sure that the bolt's butt-end is stopped by something just before the catch: otherwise you may experience misfires. Making a special bolt holder is one option.

Components of a lever and pin trigger

The trigger lever operates in a shallow groove carved to the stock. This keep it from moving sideways. The sides of the groove are rounded, so that yanking the trigger sideways does not split them. The front part of the groove becomes noticeably deeper right after trigger's pivot point. The front-end of the trigger has a shallow groove to receive the bindings that also go through the hole in the stock. As the hole is placed slightly to the front of the pivot point, tightening the binding thread sufficiently makes the trigger return to rest position by itself; the bindings effectively act as a primitive return spring.

The trigger lever has a slightly loose hole for the pin. The looseness allows the pin to slide directly up the hole in the stock, instead of following the circular movement of the trigger.

A very small hole is drilled to the lower part of the pin. Another, matching small hole is drilled through the middle of the pin-hole in the trigger. A length of thick thread is soaked in glue and pushed into the hole in the pin and let dry. After this the pin is inserted into the trigger's hole and the thick thread passed through the small hole going through the trigger. Next thread is knotted and - if necessary - secured with a drop of glue.

  • The trigger setup is fairly simple, but hard to describe. I'll try to upload some photos of a real crossbow soon. The most important things to note are:

     * The pin pushes the bowstring off the notch, releasing the bowstring
     * The trigger is tied to the stock (no screws or bolts)
     * The pin is loosely attached to the trigger
     * The pin moves up and down in a hole drilled to the stock
    

    There not much more to it than this :). The rest is fine-tuning.

  • This drawing is very difficult to understand. I would love to have this info....
